As a nation, we’ve made great strides in combining growing the economy and cleaning up air pollution. But as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is setting up to roll out nine new new rules or regulations, most of which are related to coal-powered electricity, it’s worth asking, “Is the gain worth the pain?”

Yesterday American Experiment released my policy brief on Minnesota’s ban on new coal-fired electricity. Yes, Minnesota bans new coal-fired electricity. This is hard to understand when coal is the chief reason for Minnesota’s historically low electricity rates.

Minnesota businesses require competitive energy rates to compete both nationally and globally. Paycheck-to-paycheck families need affordable energy to meet all their other basic needs. So, you’d think that Minnesota lawmakers would have wanted to measure and track the impact of the state’s new green energy regulations on current and future energy prices. After all, many of these regulations were intended to steer utilities away from low-cost energy investments.
