Tom Emmer Selected to Lead Republican House Campaign Arm

As leadership positions for both parties took place yesterday, Minnesota’s three term Rep. Tom Emmer was elected NRCC Chair after having run unopposed for the position. Set to replace Rep. Steve Stivers of Ohio in January, Emmer’s objective is to bring a unified message. Emmer stated “Republicans … and our candidates need to do a much better job of communicating with people on the street where they live, of reaching them on the issues that are most important to them.”

The insight Congressman Emmer has is consistent with the problems Republicans faced in the 2018 midterms. Losing just under 40 seats in the House, nearly all these seats were pick ups for Democrats in suburban districts. Suburban districts represented by fellow Minnesota Republican Congressmen Erik Paulsen and Jason Lewis were lost as part of this swing. In these districts like these where social issues often hurt Republican turn out, where economic stances have historically proven to be Republicans saving grace. Having face to face connections with constituents, as well as an effective advertising game may very well lead Republicans to win back control in 2020 with Tom Emmer at the helm.
