American Experiment Opposes the Carbon Tax Scam

Last week, 75 conservative organizations signed a public letter to Congress opposing “any carbon tax” days after reports that Utah Republican Sen. Mitt Romney openly considered backing carbon tax bill, and American Experiment was one of them.

The letter, circulated by Americans for Tax Reform, read:

“We oppose any carbon tax. A carbon tax raises the cost of heating your home in the winter and cooling your home in the summer. It raises the cost of filling your car. A carbon tax increases the cost of everything Americans buy and lowers Americans’ effective take home pay. A carbon
tax increases the power, cost and intrusiveness of the government in our lives.”

American Experiment took the lead in fighting Governor Walz’s proposed 20-cent gas tax, which I think was partly an attempt to shift general fund money away from transportation to other priorities, and partly an attempt to make driving more expensive as a means of incentivizing alternative modes of transportation.

The video below is a good briefing on the carbon tax scam. Some faux conservative groups are pushing the idea of a revenue neutral carbon tax as a market-based alternatives to regulations on CO2 emissions, but conservatives and free market advocates should know better than anyone else that there is no such thing as a revenue neutral tax.
