Slugging Together Again for the First Time

In Bernard Malamud’s classic metaphoric novel about baseball, The Natural, slugger Roy Hobbs is shot.  Years later Charles Krauthammer wrote of how “no one knows why Hobbs is shot.  It is fate, destiny, nemesis.  Perhaps the dawning of knowledge, the coming of sin.  Or more prosaically, the catastrophe that awaits everyone from a single false move, the wrong turn, fatal encounter.  Every life has such a moment.  What distinguishes us is whether – and how – we ever come back.”

“Ladies and gentlemen: Batting for Boston, first baseman, Number 34 – and for Minnesota, first baseman, Number 27 – David Ortiz.”
