Center of the American Experiment is Minnesota’s think tank. Its mission is to change Minnesota’s civic culture by promoting free-market, limited government policies. In addition to writing and commissioning papers, holding public meetings and informing legislators, the Center engages in an aggressive outreach program including op-eds, radio ads, videos, television ads, billboards, emails, an active web site (www.americanexperiment.org), a quarterly magazine, Thinking Minnesota, with a circulation of over 70,000, Facebook, and more. Through these means, the Center brings conservative messages to millions of Minnesotans.

The Center is looking for a Policy Fellow to help to create and disseminate the Center’s messages. The Policy Fellow will report directly to the Center’s President. American Experiment is growing, and the Policy Fellow position offers tremendous opportunity for professional development. The Policy Fellow will work on a broad range of public policy issues.

The Center is open to hiring at any level, whether it be a seasoned policy expert, a mid-level professional, or an up-and-coming policy analyst.  Regardless of level, the ideal Policy Fellow will have a strong desire to continuously learn/grow and to become a key, long-term member of the organization.

Qualifications

  • BA degree required; advanced degree (MA, PhD or JD) preferred
  • Commitment to free-market, limited government principles
  • Top-notch research, writing and oral communication skills
  • Reasonable familiarity with public policy issues in some of the following fields: public sector unions, taxes, spending and budget, pensions, state and local governance, education, health care, transportation, energy, natural resource development
  • All levels of experience will be considered, but a minimum of 2-3 years of policy experience is preferred

Responsibilities

  • Conduct research and draft papers on public policy issues
  • Write op-eds for newspapers and magazines
  • Contribute posts to the Center’s web site (americanexperiment.org), Facebook page and Twitter feed
  • Participate in public programs and meetings
  • Testify, as appropriate, before legislative committees
  • Contribute to the Center’s quarterly magazine, Thinking Minnesota
  • Work with communications staff to disseminate policy messages via radio ads, videos, billboards, etc.

The job is full-time and requires residence in the Twin Cities. Compensation is commensurate with experience.
