‘If I leave my teachers’ union, who will defend me?’

Educators weighing their options regarding union membership are often presented with misinformation on what happens outside of belonging to a union.

“The union is the only way you will be legally protected!”

“Only the union protects you from a principal who doesn’t like you!”

“Only the union provides in-person support!”

These claims are all false. Belonging to a union is not the only way to receive liability insurance and job protection benefits. There are several nonunion associations made just for teachers and educators that offer liability coverage, legal counsel and support, and other benefits.

Belonging to an alternative education organization can meet other needs of teachers, as well. The focus of these organizations is on kids and serving teachers, not partisan politics. They offer professional development opportunities that help propel an educator forward in his or her teaching career. And teachers are part of a community that shares their values and philosophy.
