The transit system lesson we can learn from The Simpsons

Today marks 30 years since The Simpsons debuted in 1989. In honor of the longest-running American primetime scripted series, I wanted to share a clip from one of my favorite episodes, “Marge vs. the Monorail.”

The lesson to be learned from this episode is clear: just because something is flashy and new does not mean the expensive form of transit is necessary. Especially if it takes priority over more valuable infrastructure maintenance, such as fixing roads. For many towns and cities, monorail is synonymous with boondoggle.
