Green New Preview: Biden Wants to End Gas Car Sales But Hasn’t Said When

Presidential hopeful Joe Biden wants to take a page from California’s energy playbook and ban the sale of gas-powered cars, according to a report in E&E News.

Biden’s climate plan, which was crafted by John Kerry and Freshman Congresswoman Alexandria-Ocasio Cortez, states the administration wants to develop “rigorous new fuel economy standards aimed at ensuring 100 percent of new sales for light- and medium-duty vehicles will be electrified.” But the plan does not say when this would go into effect.

According to E&E, Biden could try to outlaw the internal combustion engine as soon as 2035.

“2035 already has been floated as an interim climate target in two key respects.

First, it’s the date by which Biden’s climate plan calls for reaching 100% clean electricity — a goal championed by progressive climate activists.

Second, it’s the year by which California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) wants to ban sales of gas-powered cars in the Golden State, the nation’s largest auto market (E&E News PM, Sept. 23).”

A Biden administration could make these sweeping changes without consulting the House of Representatives of the Senate:

“A Biden administration could direct EPA to craft a replacement rule whose requirements were so stringent that only zero-emission vehicles could comply within 15 years.

“EPA could set a technology-forcing standard that would require new vehicles to be 60%-70% electric by 2030 and 100% electric by 2035,” Oge said.

“You don’t need a new piece of legislation under the Clean Air Act to do that. EPA and California could do that.”

Biden’s energy plan is a recipe for an unmitigated disaster. California suffered from rolling blackouts for the first time since 2001 because the sun went down and they did not have enough reliable power plants on their grid to make sure they could keep the lights on when the sun went down. This is a damning failure, and it should be a giant red flag that imposing California’s energy model on the entire country is an incredibly bad idea.

How on earth can politicians think it is a good idea to force everyone to drive electric cars when the mandates those same politicians enact make the grid so unreliable that families and businesses suffer from rolling blackouts because there isn’t enough electricity?
