No surprise: Biden’s education transition team includes several teachers’ union staff

President-elect Joe Biden has announced the names of his agency review team for the U.S. Department of Education. The team’s 20 volunteers were selected to guide education efforts and ensure a “smooth transfer of power” from the Trump administration.

No surprise, teachers’ union representatives from the National Education Association (NEA) and the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) make up a solid chunk of the team. The team will be led by Linda Darling-Hammond, who was part of Obama’s education transition team, and is also heavy on former Obama administration officials and higher education officials, reports Education Week.

Speculation over Biden’s pick for education secretary continues, with “a widespread expectation that he wants to put a union official or someone with union ties in his Cabinet,” according to Politico.
