Liberating Learning

Terry Moe and John Chubb discuss their new book, Liberating Learning, and how technology promises to make schools “significantly better over time” by replacing the “dead hand of monopoly with the dynamism of diversity and competition.”

Setting technology apart, they argue, from other sources of education improvement, is its “far-reaching capacity to change politics – and to eat away, relentlessly and effectively at the political barriers that have long prevented reform.”

Getting to what some might consider the heart of the matter, they add: “To put it simply: the seepage of technology into the system – which cannot be stopped and will continue – works slowly but inexorably to undermine the political power of the teachers unions.”

Almost twenty years ago, Drs. Chubb and Moe wrote the seminal Politics, Markets & America’s Schools.  Their new book promises to be no less path-breaking.
