Minnesota had a nearly 50% decrease in Leisure and Hospitality Employment from May 2019 to May 2020

The Bureau of Labor Statistics earlier today released data on the change in employment in the leisure and hospitality industry. As to be expected the changes in the industry are high when compared to changes in the entire labor force. This is potentially due to the fact that lockdowns largely targeted businesses in the leisure and hospitality industry.

Notably, there are some states that have been more heavily affected than others. Minnesota is one of those states. In the 12-month period between May 2019 and May 2020, Minnesota lost about 50% of the jobs available in the industry. This is a slight improvement from the period between April 2019 and April 2020, which is when most job losses occurred. But the numbers are still high.

Minnesota ranks 14th highest decrease in employment in the industry. New York had the biggest loss in employment which is not surprising as it was one of the hardest-hit states. Only Oklahoma had a less than 20% decrease in leisure and hospitality employment during this period.
