Republican state Senator arrested, colleagues immediately call on him to resign

Yesterday, Alpha News reports, Republican state Senator Justin Eichorn was “arrested on suspicion of soliciting a minor for prostitution.”

His Republican colleagues in the state Senate were quick to call for his resignation:

Eichorn’s fellow Republicans in the House followed suit as quickly:

Today, state and federal charges were filed against Eichorn.

The Republicans have acted correctly in moving quickly and decisively in this matter. The House GOP statement has it right. Eichorn, like anyone else, is entitled to due process, but those who make laws for others — and themselves — ought to be held to a higher standard. If Eichorn does not resign, Republicans should move to expel him, as they did in the recent case of Sen. Nicole Mitchell (DFL).
