Derrick Thompson: guilty on all 15 counts

After two days of deliberations, a jury in Minneapolis found Derrick John Thompson guilty on all counts.

Thompson, now age 29, was charged with 15 felonies, including 3rd-degree murder, from a June 2023 horror car crash where Thompson killed five young women (aged 17 to 20) with his rented Cadillac Escalade in south Minneapolis.

Thompson is the son of former state Rep. John Derrick Thompson (DFL-St. Paul).

In the just-concluded trial, Derrick’s defense attempted to argue that the Escalade was being driven by his older brother at the time of the Lake Street crash, Damarco John Thompson.

Damarco testified as a witness for the prosecution, telling the jury that he had never been inside the truck.

Derrick had already been convicted late last year in a federal gun and drug case arising from the same June 2023 incident.

A sentencing has been scheduled for July 24.
