Two weeks’ notice
Convicted felon, state Sen. Nicole Mitchell (DFL-Woodbury) announces her future intention to resign. Maybe next month. From the Star Tribune:
Sen. Nicole Mitchell to resign seat by early August after burglary conviction.
Presumably, the delay will allow her to collect another paycheck from state taxpayers before giving up her position.
You will recall that last Friday, Mitchell was convicted of two felony counts of breaking into her stepmother’s home in Detroit Lakes, MN, in April 2024.
The Star Tribune quotes state Senate Republican leader Mark Johnson of East Grand Forks:
Senator Mitchell was convicted of two felonies; she doesn’t get to give the Senate two weeks’ notice. Democrats shielded Mitchell for 15 months to protect their political power, but a jury needed just three hours to confirm what was already clear: she shouldn’t be a senator. Not after April 22, 2024. Not in January of 2025. And not today..”
She had the weekend to think about it. The first two words of her statement today should have been, “Effective immediately.”
If and when she does resign, Sen. Johnson will be the Senate co-leader in an evenly divided 33-33 chamber, pending a special election for the Woodbury seat.
