This Minnesota Dad is a biter
German Alexis Funez-Canelas pled guilty to one felony count of illegal re-entry of a previously deported illegal alien this morning in federal court in downtown Minneapolis.
Prosecutors documented that Funez, now age 32, had been deported in December 2023. That deportation followed his state conviction in a felony domestic assault case, which he pled down to a gross misdemeanor. A court fine of $1,355 remains unpaid in that case.
According to state court records, in August 2022, Funez stabbed his “common law wife” in the neck and bit her arm during a domestic dispute at their home in St. James, Minnesota.
Funez also struck his eldest son, age 10, during the 3 a.m. incident. Neither parent speaks English. Funez entered an Alford plea and was convicted on two counts, a gross misdemeanor and a misdemeanor.
His sentence was stayed, he was placed on two years of probation (beginning May 2023), and he was eventually deported (December 2023).
In April 2025, an arrest warrant was issued for Funez on a probation violation report.
Funez was arrested again for domestic assault in May 2025. Apparently, the victim was the eldest son from before and involved resentment by Funez over the earlier stabbing incident.
Allegedly, Funez turned on the gas stove, lit a match, and threatened to blow up the house.
In June, Funez pled guilty to misdemeanor disorderly conduct. His sentence was stayed and he was given one year of probation. However, this new guilty plea triggered a 30-day local jail sentence in the 2022 case.
The federal indictment of Funez was issued in July,
