New York electricity mix before and after Indian Point nuclear plant closure

A picture can say a thousand words. The graph below shows electricity generation in New York state after the closure of the Indian Point power plant.

Nuclear generation falls substantially on May 1, 2021, and it is replaced with natural gas generation increases when the wind isn’t blowing.

This is bad news for New Yorkers, because the Cuomo administration has worked hard to constrain natural gas pipeline capacity, meaning power plants in New York may need to burn fuel oil this winter to keep the lights on if natural gas is in short supply. If they don’t burn the fuel oil, we could see devastating blackouts in New York city.
