Found Twin Cities: American Swedish Institute
Located near Abbott Northwestern Hospital south of downtown Minneapolis, the American Swedish Institute has operated since 1929.
The Institute is based in the impressive 1908 mansion built by their benefactor, the Swedish-immigrant newspaperman Swan Turnblad.
A modernist 2012 addition to the property houses a visitor’s center, restaurant, and gift shop.
The Institute houses the local consulate of the Kingdom of Sweden. The museum is between exhibitions, with a new program to begin on July 21.
The mansion is under renovations, with significant construction work currently underway.
One of the most interesting rooms is in the basement, honoring Norse Sagas. It was donated by hotelier Curt Carlson.
Turnblad grew the newspaper Svenska Amerikanska Posten to a circulation of 40,000 around the turn of the last century. It provided the wealth for his Park Avenue home.
The museum and other attractions are open Wednesday through Sunday.
