Gov. Walz recommends increasing Dept. of Ed agency budget by nearly 82%

That seems awfully high for an agency that lost $250 million to fraud recently. In fact, Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) leadership has confirmed that it had problems with key players within the Food and Nutrition Service fraud since 2018.

Gov. Tim Walz’s agency budget recommendation for MDE is a biennial increase of 81.5 percent over the 2022 base, according to an analysis by the nonpartisan Minnesota Senate Counsel, Research and Fiscal Analysis Office.

As the agency budget, this is not the money that goes to schools.

While some of the money will be for increased accountability, additional accountability measures should still be considered before legislators approve such a noteworthy cash increase to the agency.
