“Am I a bad colleague if I leave my teachers’ union?”
This week is National Teacher Appreciation Week! True teacher appreciation shows support and respect for teachers’ voices and choices. But nearly one in five educators are concerned their views on union policies will upset their colleagues, so they don’t speak out to avoid offending them.
The burdens placed on today’s educators are many, and as teachers maneuver through these challenges, it is important they feel supported and heard. Teachers from across the country have come together through the Teacher Freedom project to shed light on common misconceptions educators may hear regarding association rights and union membership. Remember, union membership is a personal decision. And exercising your rights is a good and admirable thing. You are not a bad colleague if you decide union membership is not the best option for you and your family.
