Bill to repeal the nuclear power ban introduced at MN legislature
HF 9, a bill to, among other things, repeal the state’s ban on building new nuclear power plants, was introduced in the state House of Representatives today. The bill was one of ten introduced in today’s session.
The bill is authored by state Rep. Chris Swedzinski (R-15A, Ghent), who chairs the House Energy committee. The bill is co-authored by 34 other House members, the maximum number allowed under House rules.
The committee held its first meeting of the year this afternoon. In keeping with their ongoing boycott of the 2025 legislature, no Democrats attended the meeting or the later House floor session.
Just before adjourning, Chair Swedzinski announced that the next Energy commitee meeting would be Tuesday, January 21, and that HF 9 would be on the agenda.
The state senate also introduced its first batch of bills for 2025. Of the first 268 bills introduced in this morning’s senate session, only one appears to be related to energy. SF 58, introduced by Sen. Steve Green (R-Fosston) would exempt the state’s rural electric cooperatives from the 100 percent renewable energy mandates.
