City Is Far Better Off Seeking Energy Efficiency, Not Renewable Energy Goals
Energy efficiency is a good thing. It reduces the amount of energy used, but more importantly, at least from my perspective, it is cost effective. This is why it is a good thing that the City of Minneapolis has replaced the traditional light bulbs in 24,000 street lamps with LED lights, which are far more efficient.
The City expects the new bulbs will use 40 to 60 percent less electricity, with an ultimate savings of $150,000 per year on electricity savings. Rather than pursuing expensive and environmentally inconsequential renewable energy targets, the City Council should continue to look for cost effective ways to reduce energy consumption and reduce the burden it currently foists upon taxpayers.
