MDE focuses on equity, Social Emotional Learning as top priorities

The Minnesota Department of Education hosted its Back to School Conference today for superintendents, with the theme this year being “Centering our Students – Centering our Staff.”

Breakout sessions on equity (“Making Equity-Oriented Decisions”) and Social Emotional Learning were the top two topics MDE called attention to on its Facebook page, followed by literacy success.

According to the latest Thinking Minnesota Poll, an overwhelming plurality (41 percent) of Minnesotans want school leaders to prioritize academic excellence in education. Not make it Number 3, or Number 2, but Number 1. Nine percent of respondents said Equity and Inclusion should be schools’ top priority, and 13 percent said student mental health.
