Myon Burrell heading back to prison

Convicted murderer Myon Burrell, whose commuted sentence was a cause celebre supported by Minnesota leftists, appears to be headed back to prison.

He was originally convicted of a 2002 murder, committed while he was age 16, of an 11-year-old girl in a “stray-bullet” incident. He was released in 2020.

My colleague, David Zimmer, has the backstory on Burrell, now aged 38. Last week Burrell was sentenced to a new term of five years in state prison, concurrently, on two new felony charges.

Hennepin County jail records indicate that Burrell is still in custody, awaiting the result of his appeal in the latest case. His request for release was denied.

His most recent mugshot:

Burrell’s most recent convictions involve gun and drug charges arising from an August 2023 Robbinsdale traffic stop.

As his murder sentence was commuted, rather than getting overturned or pardoning Burrell, he was considered a felon-in-possession of the 9mm pistol found.

An additional case from May 2024 remains pending. As the Minnesota Star Tribune reports, that more recent case involves another felony drug possession charge.

In a separate civil case, Burrell has been challenging the seizure of his Chevy Tahoe in that August 2023 traffic stop. Based on recent parking tickets issued, Burrell appears to have found some success in that effort.
