Reducing tax complexity for Minnesotans

Minnesotans are some of the most heavily taxed citizens in the United States. On the Tax Foundation’s 2022 State Business Tax Climate Index, our state ranked 45th out of 50 states and the District of Columbia. This was largely driven by the state’s high individual income taxes, where we rank 45th out of 50 states. To make serious progress up these rankings, we need to see these rates come down.

But there are other factors dragging Minnesota down these rankings; fixing them would help us climb them. They are small but necessary steps in the right direction.

State policymakers should:

  • Abolish the Alternative Minimum Tax for Individuals
  • Eliminate the marriage tax penalty
