Saint Paul Public Schools debuts reading literacy documentary
Saint Paul Public Schools is set to debut a student literacy docuseries this evening (Wednesday, Nov. 20), according to the district’s website. The documentary will be available to watch online starting Monday, Dec. 16.

The four-part film, “All In: The Saint Paul Public Schools Literacy Journey” produced by Captivate Media, shares the district’s literacy journey over the last three years, documenting how SPPS “has been improving literacy instruction to positively impact student outcomes in reading.”
“In order for us to address literacy in our school district, we have to completely change the structure, with literacy being the gateway to all learning,” narrates a voice in the documentary trailer.
“We’re on the cusp of making major changes to student outcomes,” shares another voice.
The documentary covers “how SPPS is taking action with new curriculum and the WINN program” and “the impact teachers and families have seen on their students’ ability to read since the district started making these changes.”
SPPS reading proficiency districtwide has been below 40 percent for at least the last decade, peaking in 2019 with 39.5 percent of students meeting grade-level reading standards. Spring 2024 test results show 34 percent of students demonstrated reading proficiency. Third-grade reading proficiency has declined consecutively for the past three years, with 28.8 percent of students meeting grade-level standards. The district’s most recently reported spending is $21,557 per student.
