Rob Port Podcast: “The Plant is Worthless Without the Power Line.”

Last week, Great River Energy (GRE) announced they would be shutting down the Coal Creek power plant decades before the end of the plant's useful life. This decision was confusing, because as far as coal plants go, Coal Creek is one of the most productive, and lowest-cost generators in the entire United States, according to S&P Global. GRE has claimed they are open to selling the plant, but have not found any buyers. It appears this is because GRE wants to keep the large, high voltage power line that transports the electricity generated in North Dakota to customers in Minnesota, but...

Minnesota Has Highest COVID-19 Death Rate, and Highest Unemployment Rate, Out of Any Neighboring State

Nearly 625,000 Minnesotans have filed for unemployment since mid-March, and every day seems to bring new headlines of small businesses that will not survive the Coronavirus shutdown. I’m not sure if he believes Minnesota owns North Dakota, making it “our state,” but North Dakotans would be wise to ignore the voices that have cheered on an industry that has caused Minnesota’s electricity prices to skyrocket. In the spirit of full disclosure,...

North Dakota Has $5 Million War Chest To Sue Minnesota Over Energy Issues

It looks like the State of North Dakota is poised to take Minnesota back out behind the woodshed again (legally speaking) if it enacts legislation that would mandate the use of 100 percent carbon-free electricity by 2050, which has been supported by the Walz administration and several DFL members of the House of Representatives this session. According to Senator Pratt, North Dakota has a massive $5 million war chest ready to sue the state of Minnesota once again over emission regulations that would violate the Commerce Clause of the Constitution  or violate other federal laws by effectively allowing Minnesota to regulate...
