U.S. Attorney ramps up immigration prosecutions in Minnesota

A recent Twitter (X) post by Bill Melugin of Fox News caught my eye. Melugin writes about a new initiative by the new U.S. Attorney for the Central District of California (Los Angeles area) called Operation Guardian Angel.

It’s designed to work around sanctuary city/state policies that hinder ICE. The U.S. Attorney is focusing on cases where a previously-deported illegal alien re-enters the United States. From Fox News:

If they’ve come back to the US after a deportation, they’ve committed a federal felony under 8 USC 1326 known as “illegal re-entry”. As soon as the task force ID’s an alien booked into a local jail who has a previous deportation, they seek a federal criminal warrant on them for felony re-entry, signed off on by a federal judge.

Intrigued, I was curious if our local U.S. Attorney for Minnesota is pursuing any of these “illegal re-entry” cases. I contacted their office and a spokesperson responded that some 56 cases have been charged year-to-date. In a typical full year, the figure is fewer than ten.

A lot is happening that doesn’t always generate big headlines.
