Weapons incident at Brooklyn Center graduation ceremony

Wednesday evening the Brooklyn Center High School was celebrating graduation when a fight broke out among the six males. Staff and Brooklyn Center police were able to detain two of the combatants, Jason Hence and Jammal Barrow-Newell, both 18, as they fled from the area. Police recovered loaded handguns on each man – both were booked into the Hennepin County Jail. It is unclear if either Hence or Barrow-Newell were actually part of the graduation ceremony, though it appears not.

Investigation revealed that the handgun Barrow-Newell possessed had been reported stolen from Brooklyn Park, and the handgun Hence possessed didn’t have a serial number.

Both men were charged today in Hennepin County District Court with Possession of Dangerous Weapons on School Property. Hence was further charged with being a prohibited person, due to a previous juvenile adjudication for a crime of violence. Both will make a First Appearance today and a decision will be made on bail and conditions for release.

We’ll track this case as it works it’s way through court. Will the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office and the 4th Judicial District ensure justice is served? Stay tuned.
