Minnetonka High School program helps students get their hands on trades-focused opportunities

A new Minnetonka High School program called “Momentum” is helping students explore post-secondary opportunities in the skilled trades. From manufacturing, construction, and architecture to engineering and design and engine automotive careers, the Momentum program provides hands-on learning and real-world experiences for students interested in these lucrative industries.

Launched in the fall of 2020, Momentum expands on what the district has identified regarding growing student interest in technology education. Construction of a 10,300-square-foot facility to house a six-car automotive shop for automotive maintenance courses and flexible-use spaces for other Momentum courses, such as the Physics of Home Renovation, is currently underway and is expected to be completed by the end of 2021, according to a news announcement from the district.

A report commissioned by American Experiment reveals that a tech school education can yield startling future earnings. And employers are eager to fill a host of skilled, well-paying positions in skilled trades that form the backbone of Minnesota’s economy.

It’s important young people are supported to pursue what they are passionate about and understand the range of opportunities available to them as they plan for their futures. “I’m not the kind of person who likes to sit in a chair all day,” shared a Minnetonka student. “I learn by doing, through hands-on, independent work that allows me to identify problems and stick with it until I find a solution. My long-term goals are to be happy in a well-paying career where I can use my hands, do what I love and be useful to my family and my community.”
