Habeas corpus works the weekend
In an unusual holiday-weekend session, the U.S. District Court in Minnesota is open for business, hurriedly adding new habeas corpus petitions to the docket to prevent more illegal aliens from being deported.
This three-day weekend (January 17-19), dozens of new habeas cases have been reported. Last weekend (January 10-11) no cases were reported of any type. The previous four-day weekend (January 1-4), zero cases were reported.
As of today (Monday, Jan. 19), 247 habeas petitions have been filed in Federal District Court in Minnesota since the beginning of the calendar year. That number represents 57 percent of all the 437 civil cases filed with the court in 2026.
Expressed a different way, in 2025, it took until February 5 before we reached civil case No. 437, of all types.
In my experience, federal bureaucrats don’t work weekends. Much less holiday weekends. Much less cold, snowy holiday weekends.
Thanks?
