Democrats are serious about taxing 160 percent of your car’s value

The Walz administration presented their proposed budget to the House Transportation committee last week.

As we reported last month, Gov. Tim Walz wants to dramatically increase the cost of your annual license tab for your automobile. It’s a 60 percent increase in year one of car ownership, and an overall 20 percent increase over the expected life of a car.

Here’s the official MNDOT example, using a $40,000 purchase price:

The state expects the increase to bring in an additional $700 million per year (pages 6 to 9) in tax revenue, at a time when the state is showing an $18 billion budget surplus.

The Commissioner of Transportation’s budget presentation on this item begins at the 4:30 mark of this video.
