Found Twin Cities: Russian Art Museum

The Minneapolis-based Russian art museum is housed in a Spanish Colonial church.

The Museum of Russian Art (TMORA) is located in south Minneapolis, at I-35W and Diamond Lake Road. The museum’s collections are housed in a former church, built in the Spanish Colonial style. The former church building is visible from the freeway.

The museum was founded in 2002 by a local art collecting couple, Raymond and Susan Johnson. It features art produced in the former Soviet Union or by emigre artists born in the USSR. The museum makes clear its support for Ukraine, a former Soviet republic,

The 1935 building is based on Spanish mission churches in the San Antonio, Texas, area.

The church moved across the street to a new sanctuary in the mid-1970’s. The church and the museum share a common parking lot.
