George Floyd Square: five years after
In recognition of the upcoming fifth anniversary, I undertook my annual visit to George Floyd Square in south Minneapolis yesterday afternoon.
Except for the cold, late-May rain, the scene looks exactly like it did in 2024, 2023, and 2022. Other than some new signage and five-years’-worth of general decay, nothing has changed at the intersection of Chicago Ave. South and East 38th Street since the events of May 25, 2020.
Afterward, I swung by the ruins of the Minneapolis 3rd precinct police station on Lake Street. The precinct was abandoned to rioters and burned on May 28, 2020. It has a new sign!

According to the city:
The building at Minnehaha 3000 Ave. is now the Minneapolis Democracy Center (MDC). This was formerly known as the 3rd precinct building. We are planning a new use for this space.
According to the sign, the new space will feature “early voting” and “voter outreach.”
