MN AFSCME Union Leader Resigns

The head of Minnesota’s AFSCME Council 5—a large and overtly political labor union in the state—has resigned after weeks under investigation over unspecified allegations, according to MPR News.

Executive Director John Westmoreland submitted his resignation to the board this week. His investigation began in August, but the union has not disclosed what prompted the inquiry, saying “it was withholding details to protect the privacy of the parties involved.”

AFSCME Council 5 represents more than 17,000 Minnesota public employees, but they most likely will never find out why their union boss hit the road, as his resignation “effectively ends the investigation.”

The Center’s EmployeeFreedomMN project has been helping many dissatisfied AFSCME Council 5 members exercise their freedom of choice regarding union membership. Some do not appreciate their hard-earned money supporting political candidates and organizations they disagree with. Others believe their professional needs are not being met and that the union’s services aren’t worth paying for.
