More LA freight yard chaos

That chaotic Union Pacific railyard just outside of downtown Los Angeles continues to generate headlines. The situation is so bad that even California Governor Gavin Newsom wonders what’s going on.

The latest headline involves stolen firearms, with “dozens” of handguns, shotguns, and other weapons missing and presumed stolen from shipping containers passing through the yard. It truly is something out of the Wild West.

When the story first broke, Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascon pointed his finger at the railroad. Gascon has his own troubles to deal with, now that a new recall effort against him has been certified. His opponents have been able to gather signatures on recall petitions after an earlier effort fizzled.

The governor visited the railyard himself recently, and even pitched in to help clean up the garbage. He noted that conditions there “look like a third-world country.” The Governor asked, “What the hell is going on?” and pledged state support for the cleanup.
