Teacher Appreciation Day: Fun Facts on Average Salaries

Geeky but fun teacher facts!

The Economics Daily reported:  “May 8 is National Teacher Appreciation Day, a day set aside to thank the educators who support, nurture, and inspire students across the United States. In May 2017, there were over 4.1 million preschool, primary, secondary, and special education teachers in the United States. Their average annual wage was $58,780. Among these, there were about 1 million secondary school teachers with an average annual wage of $62,860.”

The report provided an interactive map from the Bureau of Labor Statistics where you can see data on teacher earnings; don’t forget that salary is just one part of the equation. You need to add in the cost of providing retirement savings (403b, pensions, or both) and then health care (which in Minnesota has skyrocketed). Some states like New York require school districts to provide liability insurance, as well.

Minnesota secondary teachers have an average wage of $62,590 plus benefits. (Average annual wages for secondary school teachers, except special and career/technical education, May 2017.)
