13 things for Minnesota’s legislators to do
Last January, I wrote a post titled “12 things for state legislators to do.” None of them got done, but, as an eternal optimist, here, slightly amended, is my list of things for Minnesota’s legislators to get done when they meet in January.
Spending and Taxes
State policymakers should:
- Abolish Minnesota’s estate tax
- Abolish the Alternative Minimum Tax for individuals
- Eliminate the marriage tax penalty
- Conform Minnesota to the federal depletion schedule
- Eliminate the Alternative Minimum Tax for corporations
- Enact a Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights (TABOR)
- Amend the legislation which changed the state flag and seal to say that “these materials may be used until supply is exhausted,” striking out the deadline of January 1, 2025

State policymakers should:

State policymakers should:
- Pass a “Clean Slate” bill like those in Pennsylvania and Utah
- Repeal our “Ban the Box” law
- Enact a Pay-as-You-Go provision whereby new regulatory requirements or costs must be offset by eliminating old ones
- Adopt sunset provisions for state regulations
