Border Patrol agent reportedly shot man armed with a handgun in Minneapolis

This morning at approximately 9:00 a.m., near 26th St. and Nicollet Ave South in Minneapolis, federal agents working as part of Operation Metro Surge, attempted to arrest a man who was reportedly armed with a handgun.

Video of the incident has surfaced from across the street from the incident. It only shows about a 44-second segment in which the agents approach the man and begin to struggle with him. The man “turtled up” on his knees, preventing the agents from securing him. A fourth man, presumably a plain-clothed agent or possibly a citizen, approached and grabbed one of the man’s legs.

A short time into the struggle, all four men near the suspect move back rapidly, in apparent reaction to gunfire. The fourth man ran toward the camera and had what appears to be a handgun in his right hand. It is unclear which agent(s) may have fired shots or if the suspect also fired shots. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has released a brief statement that the suspect was armed with a handgun and two magazines.

EMS transported the man away from the scene, and Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara has reported that the man has died. It is presumed at this time that the FBI will again be asked by the DHS to conduct the follow-up investigation into the shooting.

Governor Walz took to X within an hour of the shooting to describe it as “another horrific shooting” by “untrained officers.” Such a statement is utterly irresponsible at this early stage.
